day +273

During the past several days, I've been spending a significant amount of time planning my trip. I've managed to book reservations for lodging and transportation for the first -half of it. Presently, I'm working on Washington and Oregon. California was a late addition to my itinerary. Glacier National Park and the Pacific Northwest have always been at the top of my long list of domestic destinations and therefore, are at the core of this trip. Though it would be great to visit California as I expressed in earlier posts, as I add up the costs of the trip thus far and then, include Washington and Oregon, I think that more and more it will be unlikely.

My big trip has taken several different shapes over the years, but when I first began to save money for it (about 5 years ago) I thought of traveling throughout East Africa, Oceania, and the Indian subcontinent where the dollar would stretch farthest. Though not as strong as it used to be, the dollar still would be great in some of these places. However, international travel is out of the question for me right now anyway. Once a budget escape for Americans, Canada isn't so much of a bargain anymore either. Canada's loonie is slightly more valuable than the dollar right now.

O Canada, Where Have Your Bargains Gone?

What once looked like a decent savings for travel now looks smaller with the rise in inflation.

So, Portland may be the terminus for this cross-country trip of mine but we'll see. But hey, so what! That's still some hell of trip, a trip to celebrate life. The important thing is that I'd be seeing the very places that I've longed to see: Montana and the Pacific Northwest.

Hey Chris,

If I make it to northern California w/ San Fran being my terminus, then most definitely I hope to see you in Sacremento. I'll be sure to let you know what happens.

Stay well,
Duane

Duane, you can stay in my spare room in my house if you want to visit San Diego. We got your room and board covered for the visit. We'll be more than happy to have you! You and I could visit some local landmarks like the Coronado Bay bridge and Point Loma. You'll need your camera for that! Send me an Email if interested.

So when is this trip planned for? I didn't know you were coming to Portland! If I'm out of the hospital and feeling well by the time you're here visiting, we should totally get together and swap war stories! Send me an e-mail.
