tour de bronx 2007

This morning at about 10 I walked up the block to 158th Street and the Grand Concourse, where I met Cliff, a fellow prizefighter and post-allo SCT patient, who along with his wife participated in today's 13th Annual Tour de Bronx, composed of a 25 and 40-mile bicycling route through the borough of the Bronx. Cliff is an enthusiastic cyclist, who has participated in many different cycling competitions and events but this was his first time in the Tour de Bronx. (He invited me to join them in the Tour next year). Moreover, yesterday was a very special day for him. It marked the one-year anniversary of his allo SCT in which his sister was his donor. It was really wonderful to finally meet him. He's one tough dude. I encourage you to check out his awesome blog here.

After meeting Cliff, I lingered around the Tour's rendezvous point at the corner of the Bronx County Court House in order to snap several dozens of photos of the participants.

By the way, here's a very interesting NPR report from 2004 by Jeff Lunden about his experience riding in the Tour de Bronx: Life's a Bike: The Tour de Bronx.

That is so cool that you got to meet up with Cliff.
You two guys are the strongest people I know on this planet. You continue to inspire me every single day.

Duane, I'm coming to Boston with Veronica in June next year. I'd sure like to shake your hand and thank you in person for helping me through my own personal nightmare! I hope we can arrange something.

Thanks guys. Yeah, it was pretty neat to meet Cliff finally. Thankfully, I didn't have to go very far . . . just a block away from home. How sweet is that?

Though Boston is a nice drive from NYC, I'm sure we'll be able to work something out. Just let me know when you both will be in the area. It would be great to meet up!

It's amazing this thing called the Internet has helped to create so many wonderful relationships.

What a pleasure it was to finally meet you, Duane! Sorry I didn't see you before standing on the corner. The Port-o-Johns were blocking my view. So, next year's Tour de Bronx, right? Here's the pic of Duane and Cliff.
