my birthday

Sunday, March 4th was my 27th birthday. I celebrated with my folks, sister, Su and my grandmother. It was a very simple, low-key affair.

I spent most of the day going through the bag of mail that had gathered during my absence. The most immediate pieces of mail were hospital-related, of course. Occasionally, I was interrupted by phone calls of friends or relatives calling to wish me a happy birthday and best wishes. As part of my birthday gift, Su wanted to take me to the American Museum of Natural History that day in order to see the new permanent exhibition about human origins, but there was just too much happening that day and too little time. I was looking forward to playing a few old school Nintendo games, such as Mega Man 2, as well but my free time that day was occupied by the mail and logistical issues since Sunday was my only day to take care of such necessary matters since I'd be in the streets running between hospitals the following day.

My mom prepared an enjoyable meal for us and Denise baked two cakes. I was sure to bring a nice chunk of the chocolate cake back here with me. We took a lot of pictures of each other. My eyes teared up (though I did a good job of trying to hide it) when it was time for me to make a wish and blow out the candles. I wished to be well. I wished to do this for my 28th and 29th and 30th. I became emotional inside as I, in the company of my family who love me so much, reflected on my 27th birthday aware of the challenges that await me and not wholly sure that I'd be around for my 28th. The profundity of the moment was a bit too real. I couldn't help but think that the moment had the solemn atmosphere of a final meal or last supper.

My stay home was brief. I wish I had more time to just chill and not spend so much time sorting the mail. But it was enjoyable, nonetheless. It was great to be with Denise and be home with my parents and Su.

Duane,

I had no idea it was your birthday! I missed it. Happy belated birthday. I'm so glad that I've been able to make a new friend at U of C...so many people here are so standoffish and just unfriendly.

So, thanks for (1) being friendly and (2) letting me in on a part of your life many of us fellow program-ers don't get to see.

I value your friendship a lot, and happy birthday again. :)
