water on mars?

This week NASA scientists announced that photographs taken by the Mars Global Surveyor indicate evidence of water on the Red Planet today. There are some scientists, who are a bit slow to embrace this preliminary evidence arguing that more substantial evidence is needed. I agree. More evidence is needed, but this could be the 'squirting gun' (mirroring the "smoking gun" in the lead up to the Iraq War) in our search for water on Mars. Of course, the consensus is that water did exist billions of years ago on Mars, but this latest evidence from the Mars Global Surveyor leads us to belief that water is present on the Martian surface right now.
