rss feed

Recently a friend brought to my attention the added benefits of a RSS feed to my blog, which I myself had thought about some time ago but then I placed the idea under the rug in part because I didn't understand the point of a RSS feed fully to begin with. So, his reminder was a welcomed one.

Rather than explain what a RSS is in my own words, which I'm sure would be a botched effort, I'd rather quote an online source:

RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, including major news sites like Wired, news-oriented community sites like Slashdot, and personal weblogs. But it's not just for news. Pretty much anything that can be broken down into discrete items can be syndicated via RSS: the "recent changes" page of a wiki, a changelog of CVS checkins, even the revision history of a book. Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-aware program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate way.

RSS-aware programs called news aggregators are popular in the weblogging community. Many weblogs make content available in RSS. A news aggregator can help you keep up with all your favorite weblogs by checking their RSS feeds and displaying new items from each of them.

For those of you who read blogs or other online news sources avidly, news aggregators ( aka readers) can help you to keep up to date with the latest posts as they're published. In addition, all your favorite blogs/sites can be syndicated or streamlined into one source, one reader. Bloglines is a very solid reader, but it's one among many others. You'll notice a few new icons of some of these readers in my sidebar. Click one and you'll be ready to subscribe to this blog for regular updates.
