german pride

Though I have watched very little of the Word Cup matches thus far, I have been very interested in the social and cultural issues that these games have brought to the fore. Notably the problem of racism and hooliganism in European soccer has attracted my attention. Today's NY Times has an interesting piece about the visibility of German pride expressed by the parading and waving of the national flag. Of course, due to its recent dark past many Germans for a long time have felt uneasy about the overt parading of the black, red, and gold but this year's World Cup tournament has changed some of that earlier hesitance. Read about it here.

Here's another interesting story about the World Cup: Losses, and the Losing Losers Who Hate Them.
